Community Curator Vacancy

Wessex Museums are looking for a new Community Curator (Wiltshire) who will be based at The Salisbury Museum.

Wessex Museums is a thriving partnership of the four principal museums across Dorset and Wiltshire that tell the stories of Wessex from prehistory to now, namely: Poole Museum, Dorset County Museum, The Salisbury Museum and Wiltshire Museum. Over 300,000 people visit the partner museums each year.

Wessex Museums is an Arts Council England funded National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) and much of the work of our partnership programme centres on engaging with undeserved communities in our localities. Our mission is to support museums to connect, inspire and add value to peoples’ lives.

The Partnership is looking for an individual who is passionate about working with the community to develop and lead community engagement across Wiltshire for both The Salisbury Museum and Wiltshire Museum. The post holder will build on the work of the current Community Curator by developing strong community partnerships, particularly with underserved audience groups. We want to engage our local communities with our museums’ collections and together share the stories of our region through a vibrant and innovative community engagement programme.

The Wessex Community Curator (Wiltshire) will work across two of the Wessex partner museums – The Salisbury Museum and Wiltshire Museum – to engage communities in all aspects of the museums’ work in support of long term organisational change. The role will represent the museums in their local communities and help to ensure that they are relevant to and representative of these communities.

They will take an intersectional approach to developing strong relationships with each museums’ local communities, particularly those that represent underserved audiences. Through these relationships they will develop collaborative and community-led engagement programmes inspired by our museums collections, including through co-creation and co-curation.

The Wessex Community Curator (Wiltshire) will be part of the Learning Exchange network for Wessex Museums, supported by the Wessex Engagement Lead and working in close collaboration with counterparts in Dorset and Poole, and learning and engagement colleagues across the Wessex Museums,  to ensure sustainable, best practice in community engagement.
