New Volunteering Opportunities - Community Oral Histories Project

We are recruiting volunteers for an exciting new community project!

"Changing Places, Common Ground" is an Inter-generational Oral Histories project that will involve groups of older adults and groups of young people from across the city. This project will work to bring people together across summer 2021 - at a time when we have all had to be apart for so long. To make this project happen, and collect up to 50 new oral histories from local residents which give us new perspectives on our city and its people, we need volunteer support.

We are adapting to the rules around the pandemic to deliver this work, so sessions may be conducted outdoors and some of the volunteering on this project can be done from your own home.

We are looking for two types of volunteers.......

Transcription Assistants - This role involves working from your own home to transcribe and summarise the collected Oral Histories so that they can become part of the museum's permanant collection. A wonderful opportunity to listen to the stories and to enable the voices of the participants to be heard by future generations. Training will be offered in transcription and using the free software required - all you need is access to a computer.

Transcription will take place between June and September 2021

Session Assistants - We need people who are interested in supporting and listening to people, young and old, to help them participate in our workshops. Session Assistants will help the workshop facilitator and will often take part in workshops alongside participants and support them to take part in a positive and friendly way. They will help us to evaluate the project and support the participants to conduct and record their own oral histories. Training will be offered in how to support the session, how to use our basic recording equipment and community oral history work.

Training will take place outdoors in the week commencing the 17th May 2021 and you would need to be available to support workshops from the 24th of May to the end of July and/or September 2021
