This year’s Festival of Archaeology includes talks by famous archaeologists, a showground of living history demonstrations and heritage organisations and a live dig in the museum grounds. For everyone from professionals to families looking for a fun day out – the festival is the place to be.
Ticketed talks
A programme of ticketed talks will include archaeologists, authors and broadcasters revealing exciting research and discoveries on a range of topics from Ancient Egypt to Stonehenge.
Showground
Come and discover the packed museum showground full of opportunities to try ancient skills, take part in activities and find out about the past. With a wide range of heritage organisations, living history displays and hands-on fun there is something for all the family.
Phil’s Dig
New this year is a live dig in the museum showground. Led by well-known archaeologist, Dr Phil Harding, ‘Phil’s Dig’ is a special chance to see archaeology in action. This is a fascinating insight into the practical side of archaeology.
Exhibitions and Gallery Talks
During the festival weekend the museum’s temporary exhibitions will be ‘Writing for Eternity: Decoding Ancient Egypt’ a British Museum touring exhibition and ‘Icons of the North Wessex Downs: An exhibition by Anna Dillon’. On Saturday you can explore the exhibitions further with free gallery talks.
